The Future of the Pearl Industry

Currently, President Ogami serves as a member of the Export Expansion Strategy Committee of the Japan Pearl Promotion Association, a core organization within the industry, and also holds the position of director at the Japan Pearl Exporters’ Association.
Through the activities of the association, various initiatives are being undertaken to contribute to the development of the industry.
Export Priority Items of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries
As part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries' export expansion strategy, pearls have been designated as a key export item. Leveraging subsidies from the ministry, the Japan Pearl Promotion Association organizes the Japan Pearl Fair, operated by the Japan Pearl Exporters' Association, contributing to the expansion of exports.
The gathering place for pearls in Japan
Since the invention of round pearls, Japan has long been a hub for pearl accumulation. However, for the past two decades, Hong Kong has taken over that position. In an effort to reclaim this status for Japan, an auction previously held in Hong Kong for South Sea pearl producers, before the onset of the pandemic, has now been relocated to Kobe. This initiative aims to contribute to the development of the pearl trade and distribution in Japan.
Elimination of Pearl Tariffs in ASEAN
The tariffs on pearls in ASEAN have been gradually reduced, moving towards complete elimination. The removal of tariffs is expected to further facilitate the expansion of exports in the future.
Simplification of Export Procedures
The export declaration process after overseas buyers conducted purchasing in Japan was complicated. To promote exports, we lobbied relevant government agencies and implemented measures such as setting up bonded storage facilities at exhibition venues to simplify procedures for export declarations.
Renovation of the Pearl Hall
The Pearl Hall, located in the former foreign settlement area of Kobe, was completed in 1952. Over the course of approximately 70 years, it has served as a venue for auctions, museums, and other functions in Kobe, a hub for pearl accumulation.
Due to aging, it has been decided to replace the old building with a new one. In 2026, it will be reborn as a new Pearl Hall, fulfilling its role as a hub for pearl accumulation.
